Each year paint companies, designers and human kind alike try to predict what we will see the coming year. Much like a weatherman sends out forecasts, but a little less on point and subjective. In past years Pantone company has been the leading trend setter when it comes to color forecast that you see in any design industry. But now, all major paint companies, artists and designers send our their own predictions of what they think will be trending and what they would like to see. As I was reviewing all the color trends for this year, there was a pretty unanimous color with most, which was a Sage Green. And let me tell you, I. AM. HERE. FOR. IT. If you’re thinking, “This looks like the color of my Mom’s dining room from the 80’s!”, you are probably pretty close. If you’re thinking “this looks almost colonial and historic”, then you would also be right.
Why I love it?
There is something so grounding, renewing and organic about the colors above. If you think about how insane the world has been with the Pandemic, I think everyone is trying to find the steady and a NEW normal. That looks different for everyone but I think we are all looking for warmth in our spaces and hope in the days to come. So I think this warm light green is the perfect combination for that.
Ways to use it?
WALLS & MILLWORK – Julia Markham said it best, “Traditional is Trending” and there is nothing more traditional than a gray sage green and using it as a trim and molding color. Need proof? Visit any historic building. These greens are subtle enough to act as neutrals so that is why it works and has for 100’s of years.
WALLPAPER – Major manufacturers of wallpaper such as William Morris and Lewis and Wood know whats up and how beautiful this color is. They have been using this hue in their wallpaper designs for years and its exciting to see if being used in actual spaces now. I mean, how cozy is that bedroom below!? That wallpaper is a showstopper for sure. Oh…and look! Millwork painted in a matching beautiful green.
TEXTILES
I’ve noticed it for a while now, but you’re going to start seeing it in table linens, bed linens and throws. I am sure it will be hitting the shelves in big box stores as well. My shop MAYHAW HEIRLOOMS has a beautiful sage green pillow in stock right now that is right on trend in color and style and handmade by the talented Courtney at ACORN PILLOWS.
What do you think?
I think it can be quite controversial for some to accept color trends of the past that are back in style now. Funny how most things come around full circle. Except bright green carpet. That trend can stay dead in my opinion. I am already planning to use it in a few placed in my house. It’s a good staple color especially when it has enough gray in it. Excited to see it being used this next year if my/design industries predictions are correct.
